Water in the City of Cape Town
Over the last few years, water resources have become strained. In the Western Cape, increasing population numbers have meant that supplying all areas of the province with fresh potable water has necessitated the need for increased infrastructure and, as a result, charging water users in high-usage and high-income areas more money for the water used. At the peak of the water crisis in the Western Cape, dam water levels were averaging between 14% and 29%, and talks of “Day Zero” and increased water vigilance were ramped up. Significant water restrictions were implemented by the City of Cape Town, and over a period of six months, the city was able to reduce its daily water usage to 500 million litres. Since then, residents of the city have been under strict water usage conditions, and for many properties, this has meant the addition of smart water meter solutions.
