How do smart water meters work? With an ever-increasing population, there is a greater need for a better understanding of water consumption and its applications. Advances in water meter technology have made this possible. Smart water metering provides real-time data on your water consumption.

Residences throughout the city have had smart water meters installed on their properties in an effort to ‘save water’. But many still do not know exactly how smart water meters work. Water Utility Solutions’ experts will help you better understand how the device is read, how it benefits you, and how the smart technology works.

What is a smart water meter and how do they work?

A smart water meter is a device that communicates wirelessly with a local or wide area network, allowing for remote monitoring and leak detection, resulting in less water waste. Smart water meters work by using wireless connections to take remote readings. These readings can be taken at any time of the day and fed into an automated system. The meters are referred to as smart water meters because they can collect time-stamped water consumption data, detect leaks, and alert to these leaks before significant waste occurs.

The technology behind smart meters

Utilising cutting-edge technology makes it possible for us to offer the best water solutions to every one of our customers. By remaining in consultation with our customers and compliant with current regulations, we can guarantee a professional, reliable, and expertise-driven service delivered with excellence.

In general, water meters are enabled with two different types of technology, ultrasonic and electromagnetic. Our state-of-the-art Kamstrup devices are enabled with ultrasonic technology. This means that the meters use sound waves to measure the flow of water; this is also known as flow meter technology. Ultrasonic metering is based on the principle that different signals take different amounts of time to travel between two sensors.

The other type of water meter technology is electromagnetic. A magnetic field is applied to water flowing through a pipe, generating a voltage proportional to the flow rate. The flow rate is then calculated using this voltage and displayed on the meter’s digital display.

Both ultrasonic and electromagnetic meters have a high degree of accuracy. An error curve indicating figures that are close to reality is what needs to be achieved by smart water meters. As a result, Kamstrup meter technology is currently the most accurate on the smart utility market.

The importance of knowing how your water is used

The costs of basic services and utilities have increased; in South Africa, electricity and water top the list of costly utilities. As a necessary resource, water, and in particular the use of water in the City of Cape Town, is closely monitored. Understanding how a smart water meter works and how the readings are calculated allows for better management and understanding of water use. This has become increasingly important for consumers and water utility companies; smart water meters enable this ability.

Our full-service water utility solution includes pre- and post-paid water meters, as well as alternatives to traditional water supply options.
