HOW LEAK DETECTION & ACOUSTIC TECHNOLOGY WORK TOGETHER
When pressurised pipelines leak, water gushes out of the leaking pipe creating vibrations. These vibrations correlate to specific sounds and each variant of water leakage has a different sound associated with it.
The pipe material vibrates at the leakage point.
These vibrations are transmitted by the pipe and can even be noticed at distant contact points, for example at fittings.
This is known as a structure-borne sound and is made audible by using an acoustic leak detection device.
OTHER VARIABLES THAT ALTER THE SOUND PROFILE INCLUDE:
- Various types of materials (PVC, Copper, Stainless Steel, etc) are used for plumbing installations which determine the acoustic sensitivity settings used.
- Materials surrounding the pipes also contribute to the acoustic sensitivity settings used for leak detection, for example, sand, concrete, bricks and others.
